Neuroscience of Change

Kneeling Astronaut

Module Description:

The wisdom traditions from every continent teach us that change is constant, and when we resist it, we suffer. Neuroscience teaches us that our brains seek familiarity; we are creatures of habit.  Almost 90% of our thoughts and behaviors are repeated daily.   We have countless homeostatic systems in our bodies that maintain familiar loops and patterns even if they no longer serve us.  From an evolutionary perspective, resistance to change is understandable.

More than ever before, humanity, including corporations, are being asked to embrace change, innovate, adjust, adapt, and pivot in the face of climate change, advancing technology, changing resources, globalization, and an ongoing pandemic.

As we have seen in recent times, some embrace change while others resist it at all costs.   Most of us have experienced times when we wanted to change but failed to achieve it for internal and external reasons.  Change is easiest when we have support, momentum, and willingness.

80% of the change process is witnessing oneself, our impact, without judgment.   As we build mindful awareness, we begin to develop curiosity and courage to take new actions without activating the shame response or self-defense mechanisms, which is crucial.

Evolutionary biology teaches us that we have three primary needs: safety. success, and belonging. Wise leaders lead change within this framework.

Over 70% of all change initiatives fail in corporations even after millions of dollars are spent.  Creating a culture of change readiness is one of our primary engagements in culture shaping.
